Our drop in Bosom Buddies Parent and Baby Group was delighted to welcome Fiona Hecker, Mental Health Nurse, who shared information on self care, bonding and the "baby blues" on July 4th. Many of the mothers particularly enjoyed the session on baby mindfulness, which participants said gave them some peace of mind about going back to work when their maternity leave ends.
The positive impact of Preparing for Life initiatives has been getting national coverage lately as the UCD Geary Institute continues to release results from their 6-year evaluation under the direction of Dr. Orla Doyle.
On 26th and 27th September, 33 teachers from our partner schools in Dublin 5 and 17 gathered in the Hilton Dublin Airport Hotel for two days of training in the PAX Good Behaviour Game (PAX GBG) with programme creator Dr Dennis Embry from the PAXIS Institute. PAX GBG is a classroom based game to help teach children self-regulation skills.
On Tuesday, 6th September, Minister for Education and Skills Richard Bruton TD, joined children and parents for a celebratory event to mark the conclusion of our eight-year random control trial research project into our Preparing for Life home visiting programme.
On 31st August, Preparing for Life, Northside Partnership and the UCD Geary Institute for Public Policy will host an academic seminar to share the complete results from the Preparing for Life evaluation study bringing together 8 years of data from mothers, fathers, teachers and children. The event will also feature keynote addresses from leading academics Prof Richard Tremblay from the University of Montreal and UCD and Dr Kieran O'Donnell from McGill University.
Research results from the independent evaluation of our Home Visiting programme have shown that it significantly improves children’s usage of health services – reducing use of hospital services by 37% and making attendances more appropriate.
This briefing document outlines the findings from two studies which form part of the independent evaluation of the Preparing for Life home visiting programme. The first study is the Children's Profile at School Entry (CPSE) study which measured the school readiness of children entering primary school in the Preparing for Life catchment area since 2008.
